I asked my fiancĂ© Tori to help me with this video because she is my kitchen macro extraordinaire! We know that 4th of July is a holiday that comes right in the middle of the summer and it can seem like a day destined to derail you from your goals and knock you off the fitness horse with all of those BBQ treats! But we’re here with healthy hacks so you can ENJOY your 4th of July BBQ and get right back on track on July fifth.

Here are our top 5 tips:

1. Feature LEAN meats. BBQ is all about meat, but make sure you have lean options for you, even if you’re making something more fatty for your guests. Lean beef and uncured beef hot dogs are a great option.

2. Toppings. Light cheese (fat-free) can add flavor while keeping the calories down. Mustards, pickles and ketchup are great toppings when they are made organic/sugar-free/without preservatives.

3. Sides. Limit/avoid high carb/fat salads like macaroni and potato. Bring a lighter option to the table, like this tomato and cucumber that we love, or a green salad with your favorite veggies. You’ll be surprised how you enjoy the light, refreshing touch on the plate!

4. Dessert. Don’t fear! Enjoy a little bit of your favorite! Or bring a fruit salad like this one featuring a light Cool Whip

5. Alcohol. This one’s easy. Hard seltzers and liquors like tequila and vodka are lower in calories, so enjoy a few if that’s your thing. Our rule: one glass of water for every drink – keeps you hydrated and saves you the hangover so you can get right back to it tomorrow.
